Privacy, in plain language.
Overheard collects data to remember the episodes you save, where you stopped listening, and what helps you discover something you enjoy.
What we collect
The app creates a random device identifier in your browser. It records product events such as visits, successful audio starts, channel changes, listening duration, audio failures, signup actions, and sharing actions. Those events can include podcast, episode, and channel identifiers. We do not record your microphone or copy podcast audio into this database.
To limit automated event abuse, the Cloudflare connection address is one-way hashed into short-lived request counters, including one-minute event counters and one-hour signup counters. Those counters are deleted after 24 hours and are not used for recommendations.
Your saved episodes, listening history, playback positions and preferences are stored with your signed-in account. Your browser also stores device preferences and pending listening updates so they can retry if a connection is interrupted.
Why we use it
We use listening signals to improve channel selection, measure whether audio works, resume saved episodes, understand referrals, respond to requests, and decide whether Overheard is worth continuing. We do not sell personal data.
Retention
Anonymous listening and product events are deleted after 30 days. Share records are deleted after 90 days. Saved episodes and account listening data remain until you ask us to delete them. Contact and podcast-removal requests remain until they are handled and no longer reasonably needed.
Email and consent
Saving an episode does not subscribe you to product email. We use contact details you provide in a request to respond to that request. You can use the privacy contact form to withdraw consent or request access, correction, or deletion.
Service providers
Sites and Cloudflare host the app and its database. When transactional email delivery is enabled, the email delivery provider receives the destination address and email content needed to send the message. Podcast publishers and their hosting services receive normal requests for their public feeds, artwork and audio. Some playback requests may pass through Overheard's bounded audio proxy.
Your choices
You can clear local browser storage to reset the device identifier and local preferences. Clearing browser storage does not delete account saves or listening history. Use the contact form for a data request. Podcast owners can use the removal form.
